Immigration Update – eVisas Replace Vignettes

For applicants applying for a UK visa from outside the United Kingdom, physical visa vignettes (passport stickers) will progressively be withdrawn. UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) is transitioning to a fully digital immigration status system, whereby successful applicants will be issued an eVisa instead of a vignette. This forms part of the Home Office programme to digitalise immigration status and streamline verification processes across all routes.

Which Applicants Are Affected and When

Following a recent update on 11 November 2025, from UKVI, the key dates on the move to eVisas include:

  • 30 October 2025: Certain work, study, family and settlement applications made from overseas may no longer receive a visa vignette. Approved applicants under affected routes will be granted an eVisa as their official status document.
  • 11 November 2025: Applicants who still receive a vignette as part of the transitional period may also be invited to create a UKVI account to access their eVisa.
  • Early 2026: UKVI will cease issuing visa vignettes entirely for most routes. All individuals applying for entry clearance will receive only an eVisa.

Existing holders of legacy documents, such as vignette stamps, physical status letters or documents confirming indefinite leave issued before the BRP system, are expected to transition to digital status. Where applicable, individuals must submit a No Time Limit (NTL) application to digitise their immigration status and receive an eVisa.

Official Implications for Travel and Status Verification

An eVisa is a digital immigration status record accessible through a UKVI account. It confirms the holder’s identity, visa category, period of permission and any associated conditions. For more information on eVisas, visit UK eVisa FAQs: Answers to Common Questions.

Applicants must ensure that their passport or travel document is correctly linked to their eVisa before using it for travel or any form of immigration status verification, including right-to-work or right-to-rent checks.

From the point at which a vignette is no longer issued, the eVisa becomes the sole proof of immigration status. Airlines, carriers, employers, landlords and other third parties may require a share code generated through the UKVI account in order to verify immigration status digitally.
