To qualify for a UK fiance visa, applicants must demonstrate that they genuinely intend to marry, or enter into a civil partnership, within six months of arriving in the UK. This is a separate requirement from proving your relationship is genuine and subsisting. You must show sufficient preparation for a specific ceremony, not simply commitment to a partner. This guide explains what evidence is expected to prove your intention to marry in the UK for a Fiance Visa application.

What Does “Intention to Marry” Mean Under Appendix FM?
The requirements for a UK fiance visa can be found in Appendix FM of the Immigration Rules. Intention to marry is a specific and separate legal requirement. The rules state:
E-ECP.2.8. If the applicant is a fiancé(e) or proposed civil partner they must be seeking entry to the UK to enable their marriage or civil partnership to take place in the United Kingdom.
An applicant can have a genuine, long-standing relationship and still fail E-ECP.2.8 if there is not strong enough evidence to demonstrate that the primary purpose of the application is to get married in the UK. Evidence of wedding planning must be specific enough to show that the applicant is entering the UK in order to get married, not simply that they intend to marry at some unspecified future point after arrival.
What Evidence Can You Submit to Prove Intention to Marry?
The Home Office does not publish a fixed checklist, but expects a reasonable volume of consistent, credible documentation that demonstrates real progress toward a ceremony. Evidence commonly accepted includes the following.
Official bookings and appointments
- Notice of marriage appointment confirmation from a UK register office
- Venue reservation or provisional booking from a registry office, licensed venue, or place of worship
- Written confirmation from a religious officiant, where the ceremony will be conducted by a minister of religion
Financial commitment to the ceremony
- Invoices or receipts showing deposits paid for wedding services: venue hire, photography, catering, flowers
- Evidence of purchases related to the ceremony: attire, rings, or other items
Supplier and planner correspondence
- Emails or messages with florists, photographers, caterers, or wedding planners showing active planning activity
- Formal quotes accepted, or any contracts or agreements signed with service providers
Personal and social evidence
- Personal statements from both the applicant and the UK sponsor describing the planned ceremony and its timeline
- Wedding invitations issued to guests
- Social media announcements of the engagement or forthcoming wedding
- Supporting statements from friends or family who are aware of the couple’s plans and the proposed timeline
Logistics
- Travel or accommodation bookings that align with the proposed ceremony date
- Records of communication between the couple that relate specifically to the planning of the wedding
Where any documents are not in English, certified translations must be included.
The quality and consistency of the evidence carries more weight than volume alone. A small number of strong documents will carry more weight than a large collection of generic photographs and messages.
What Are the Other Requirements for a UK Fiance isa?
The intention to marry is one part of the eligibility test. To qualify for a UK fiance visa, all of the following must also be met:
- Both parties must be aged 18 or over at the time of application
- You must have met in person, the relationship cannot be based solely on online contact
- The relationship must be genuine and subsisting
- You must intend to live together permanently in the UK following the marriage
- Your UK partner must meet the financial requirement, currently a minimum gross income of £29,000 per year
- There must be adequate accommodation in the UK
- The applicant must meet an English language requirement, currently at CEFR Level A1
- You must meet the suitability requirements, meaning you have not broken any laws.

What Are the Conditions of the UK Fiance Visa?
The UK fiance visa is granted for six months from the date of entry. It is a single-purpose visa with strict conditions attached:
- The holder cannot work or access public funds during the six-month period
- The visa is issued as a single-entry visa, leaving the UK after arrival will invalidate it
- Time spent on the fiance visa does not count towards settlement (ILR)
- If the marriage or civil partnership takes place within six months, the applicant can apply for a spouse or civil partner visa from within the UK without needing to travel overseas first
- If the ceremony cannot take place within six months for a genuine reason, an extension may be possible, supported by evidence of the specific reason for the delay and clear documentation that the intention to marry remains
