Youth Mobility Scheme Visa
The Youth Mobility Scheme (YMS) Visa lets young people from a defined list of countries and territories live, work and study in the UK for up to two years.
Key Overviews
- The YMS is only open to citizens of listed participating countries and certain British national groups.
- Age limits differ by country. Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Korea: 18 to 35. All other eligible countries: 18 to 30.
- £2,530 savings held for 28 days. This is the financial requirement, and it must be held personally at the time of application.
- Two years of near-unrestricted work in the UK. You can take almost any job, study, or be self-employed within defined limits.
- The YMS does not lead to Indefinite Leave to Remain. You must switch to another route to stay long term.
What Is the Youth Mobility Scheme Visa?
The Youth Mobility Scheme is a cultural exchange and work visa operated by the UK with a small number of partner countries. It is aimed at young people who want to spend up to two years in the UK without needing a sponsor or a job offer.
Most jobs are allowed, you can switch employers freely, you can be self-employed within set limits, and you can study. It does not, however, lead to settlement. Time on a YMS visa does not count towards Indefinite Leave to Remain on any work route.
Participation is controlled by agreements between the UK and each partner country, which is why the rules differ by nationality.
Youth Mobility Scheme Visa Requirements
Under Immigration Rules Appendix Youth Mobility Scheme, you must demonstrate that:
- You are a citizen of a participating country or hold qualifying British national status
- You are aged between 18 and 30, or between 18 and 35 if you are a national of Australia, Canada, New Zealand or South Korea
- You have £2,530 held in personal savings for at least 28 consecutive days before applying
- You have no children under 18 living with you, and no children under 18 you are financially responsible for
- You have not previously entered the UK on a Youth Mobility Scheme or Working Holidaymaker visa
- You can pay the application fee (£340) and the Immigration Health Surcharge (£776 per year)
- If you are a Hong Kong or Taiwan national, you have been selected in the ballot
Eligible Nationalities and Age Limits
The YMS is open to a defined list of countries, with different age ranges applied by agreement. The current groups are:
- Citizens of Australia, Canada, New Zealand or South Korea: aged 18 to 35
- Citizens of Andorra, Iceland, Japan, Monaco, San Marino or Uruguay: aged 18 to 30
- Hong Kong passport holders: aged 18 to 30, subject to the annual ballot
- Taiwan passport holders: aged 18 to 30, subject to the annual ballot
- British overseas citizens, British overseas territories citizens and British nationals (overseas): aged 18 to 30
You must hold the qualifying nationality at the date of application. Dual nationals can apply on the strength of their eligible passport.
For Hong Kong and Taiwan applicants, the ballot opens twice a year (typically in January and July). You enter the ballot by email at the Home Office’s published window, are selected at random, and have 90 days from selection to submit your application. If you are not selected, you can enter the next ballot.
The £2,530 Savings Requirement
You must have at least £2,530 in personal savings at the date of application, held in your own name for at least 28 consecutive days. Day 28 must fall within 31 days of the application date.
Key points:
- The funds must be yours personally, not borrowed or gifted immediately before the application
- Joint accounts are accepted where you are a named account holder
- Acceptable evidence is bank statements, building society statements, or building society passbook showing daily balances
- Investment accounts, pension funds and cryptocurrency wallets are not accepted
- The balance must not drop below £2,530 at any point during the 28 days, or the 28-day clock starts again
Most refusals on the savings requirement are caused by one-off dips in balance below the threshold.
Work Rights and Restrictions
The YMS is the most flexible UK visa for work. Once in the UK you can:
- Take almost any job, full-time or part-time
- Switch employers freely without notifying the Home Office
- Be self-employed, provided your business premises are rented, your equipment is worth no more than £5,000 and you do not employ anyone
- Study (some courses require an Academic Technology Approval Scheme certificate)
- Volunteer alongside paid work
The main restrictions are:
- You cannot work as a professional sportsperson, including as a coach
- You cannot access most public funds or state benefits
- You cannot apply to extend the visa, except for nationals of Australia, Canada and New Zealand, who may extend by one further year
- You cannot bring dependants on your YMS application
If you intend to set up a larger business with employees or premises you own, you will need to switch to the Innovator Founder route or another suitable visa before you expand.
Bringing Dependants
Dependants are not permitted on a YMS application. You cannot add a partner or children to your visa.
If you have a partner who is also eligible for the YMS in their own right, they can apply separately. Children under 18 cannot accompany a YMS visa holder, and having a financially dependent child under 18 makes you ineligible for the scheme.
Couples and families intending to move together should usually look at alternative routes, such as the Skilled Worker Visa with dependants, or a Spouse Visa where there is a British or settled partner in the UK.
No Route to Settlement — What Happens Next
The YMS does not lead to Indefinite Leave to Remain. Time spent on a YMS visa does not count towards the five-year qualifying period on any settlement route. To stay in the UK long term, you must switch to a settlement route before your YMS permission expires.
Common onward routes include:
- Skilled Worker Visa if you find a role at RQF Level 6 and above with a licensed sponsor
- Innovator Founder Visa if you are setting up a business endorsed by an approved body
- Global Talent Visa if you qualify as a leader or emerging leader in a specialist field
- Spouse or Partner Visa if you meet the family route requirements and your partner is British, settled, or on a qualifying visa
