Why Do You Need a PAN Card?

A Permanent Account Number (PAN) is legally required in India for anyone conducting financial activity governed by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) under the Income Tax Act — regardless of where you live.

Financial Transactions

Required for opening Indian bank accounts (NRO/NRE), high-value investments, or managing fixed deposits exceeding INR 50,000.

Property Matters

Essential for the legal purchase, sale, or transfer of Indian immovable property as an NRI or Foreign Citizen. Required to repatriate sale proceeds.

Tax Compliance

Necessary for filing income tax returns on Indian-sourced income, or for claiming refunds on TDS (tax deducted at source).

Legal & Inheritance

Often required in documentary requirements for settling family inheritance and in Indian legal matters regarding assets.

Which Category Applies to You?

The term "NRI" is widely used to describe any person of Indian origin living outside India, but it has a precise legal meaning. Overseas Citizens of India (OCI holders), Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs), and Foreign Nationals — including individuals with no Indian heritage — are legally distinct categories, each with different PAN card requirements under the Income-tax Rules.

A PAN card is not limited to those of Indian origin. Any foreign national who transacts financially in India — through property, employment, inheritance, or investment — may be legally required to hold one.

Identifying your correct category before applying is the first step to avoiding rejection.
Form 95

Overseas Citizen of India (OCI)

An OCI holder has a foreign passport alongside a valid OCI card. For PAN card purposes, you must select "Overseas Citizen of India" on Form 95 and include your OCI card copy with your supporting documents.

Form 95

Foreign Citizen (FC)

A Foreign Citizen holds a foreign passport without OCI status — including British, American and EU nationals with no Indian-origin documentation. Form 95 applies, but citizenship category selection and documents differ from OCI applicants.

Form 95

Person of Indian Origin (PIO)

The PIO card was merged into the OCI scheme in 2015. Most PIO cardholders have since received OCI cards and are treated as OCI holders for PAN purposes. If you hold an unconverted PIO card, your correct category depends on your current documentation.

Form 93 is strictly for Indian residents. Form 95 is the mandatory form for NRIs, OCIs, PIOs, and Foreign Citizens. Submitting the resident form by mistake is the number one reason overseas applications are immediately rejected. Our service ensures the correct legal routing is used from the outset.
No. If you are an NRI or Foreign Citizen who does not reside in India for more than 182 days a year, you are legally exempt from the Aadhaar mandate. We will guide you on the exact alternative IDs and attestations required for your specific country of residence.
