British Citizenship

Becoming a British citizen gives you the permanent right to live and work in the UK, vote in all elections, and hold a British passport. There are three routes to citizenship, and the right one depends on your circumstances.

Routes to British Citizenship

Naturalisation

You have lived in the UK for several years and hold ILR or settled status. The most common route for adults who have built their life in the UK. Apply under Section 6 of the British Nationality Act 1981, with reduced requirements if you are married to a British citizen.

Registration

You were born in the UK, have a British parent, or qualify through a historical entitlement. Registration covers children born in the UK who were not automatically British at birth, children born abroad to British parents, and adults who qualify through historical provisions in nationality law.

Automatic Acquisition

You became British at birth through your parents’ nationality or immigration status. Some people are British citizens from birth without needing to apply. This depends on where you were born, when you were born, and your parents’ status at the time.

Not sure which route applies to you?

British nationality law is one of the most complex areas of UK law. Your route to citizenship depends on when and where you were born, your parents’ status at the time, how long you have lived in the UK, and your current immigration status.
