This is one of the most frequently asked questions we receive from clients preparing to take the final step in their UK immigration journey. Applying for naturalisation as a British citizen involves not only meeting the legal requirements but also ensuring that the mandatory fees and associated costs are properly understood and budgeted for.
In this guide, we outline the current Home Office fees for 2025, provide a breakdown of additional common costs, and explain the core legal requirements for British citizenship by naturalisation under the British Nationality Act 1981.

Home Office Naturalisation Application Fee – £1,605
This is the primary fee charged by the Home Office to process an application for British citizenship under Section 6(1) or 6(2) of the British Nationality Act 1981. It covers the cost of assessing your residence, character, knowledge of English, and other statutory requirements by the Home Office. The fee is non-refundable, even if your application is refused.
Citizenship Ceremony Fee – £130
All successful applicants aged 18 or over are required to attend a citizenship ceremony, usually conducted at their local authority. This additional fee covers the administrative arrangements for the ceremony and issuance of the Certificate of Naturalisation. The ceremony must be attended within 90 days of approval. If your application is refused, your citizenship ceremony fee will be refunded.
Life in the UK Test – £50
This statutory test assesses your knowledge of British values, history, and civic life. You must pass this test before submitting your application, unless exempt. The test can be booked online, and you may sit it at an authorised test centre across the UK.
English Language Test – £150
If you are not exempt from the language requirement, you must pass an approved English speaking and listening test at B1 level or higher. Costs vary by provider and location. Some applicants may also incur additional expenses for preparation courses.
Document Translation and Certification – £20+
All documents not in English or Welsh must be translated by a certified translator. Common documents requiring translation include birth certificates and marriage certificates. The cost depends on volume, language, and urgency.
UKVCAS Services – £50+
When you apply for citizenship in the UK, applicants will need to use the UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services (UKVCAS). You’ll usually need to attend an appointment at a UKVCAS service point to provide your biometric information. You can provide your supporting documents either by uploading them into the UKVCAS online service or by having them scanned at your UKVCAS appointment.
In the UK, TLScontact acts as the third-party service provider to UKVCAS. TLScontact offers services such as Document Scanning (£50) or Prime Time Appointments (£60). There is no fee to submit your biometric information or self upload documents.
British Citizenship Legal Advice or Representation – £1000+
Applicants who are uncertain about the requirements for naturalisation, lack experience with the immigration process, or wish to benefit from the support and guidance of a qualified immigration adviser are encouraged to seek professional advice or representation.
The application fee for British Citizenship by Naturalisation is non-refundable and non-transferable, regardless of whether the application is refused, rejected, or withdrawn. Accordingly, applicants must ensure their application is accurate, complete, and accompanied by all required supporting documentation in the correct format.

Requirements for British Citizenship by Naturalisation
To be eligible for British Citizenship by Naturalisation after ILR status, applicants must meet the following legal criteria:
- Have completed 5 years of lawful residence in the UK, or 3 years if married to a British citizen
- Must hold Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) or EU Settled Status for at least 12 months, unless applying as a spouse of a British Citizen
- Must have been physically present in the UK exactly 5 years before the Home Office receives your application, or 3 years before applying, if married to a British Citizen
- Not absent for more than 450 days outside the UK in the last 5 years, or 270 days if married to a British citizen
- Not absent for more than 90 days in the last 12 months
- Demonstrate knowledge of the English language, unless an exemption applies
- Pass the Life in the UK Test, unless exempt
- Must not have a serious criminal history, recent convictions, or breaches of immigration law
When to Pay the Fees
All fees must be paid at the point of submitting your online application. Applications without payment will be considered invalid and may incur an administrative fee of £25. The Home Office does not offer a payment plan or fee waiver for adult naturalisation applications.
No Fast-Track or Premium Option
Unlike other UK visa routes, there is currently no priority or premium service for naturalisation applications. In 2025, the processing time for most decisions will take approximately 6 months, though this can vary depending on complexity and Home Office processing times.
